Talk Therapy for Mental Health

  • Experience a safe and trustworthy therapeutic relationship in which you are seen and heard, valued and supported.
  • Feel held as you explore your emotions and challenges in a way that is manageable for you.
  • Explore how childhood attachment patterns, or traumatic experiences, impact your present-day life and choices.
  • Understand the reasons behind emotional self-soothing or other behaviours which inhibit your life and vitality.
  • Gain the confidence to take action towards achieving your goals.

I am a person-centred practitioner committed to empowering you, the client, to take an active role in your healing journey. My priority is to provide a safe and non-judgemental space where you feel seen and heard, valued and supported. Whether the challenges you face are significant or seemingly small, I am here to help you understand and process them in a way that feels manageable.

Through talk therapy, we will work together to explore your difficult emotions and experiences, and tend to the fears and insights that arise. As we deepen our understanding of the layers of pain or stuckness that may inhibit your aliveness  – such as trauma, shame, or abandonment – we will proceed at a pace and intensity that feels comfortable for you.

A key aspect of our work together is understanding the reasons behind patterns of behaviour that may soothe anxiety or pain but at the expense of your well-being or relationships or capacity to function as you wish. By delving into your childhood attachments we can uncover how past experiences continue to influence your present-day life. An awareness of these underlying causes is crucial for fostering mental health and personal growth.

Every individual’s path to healing is unique and requires personalised care and support. That’s why I offer both short-term and long-term therapy options. During short-term therapy (perhaps six or eight sessions) we can focus on addressing your immediate stresses and anxieties. During long-term therapy, we can explore family histories and childhood relationships in order to gain a deeper understanding of your emotional landscape and work towards self-discovery and lasting change.

I offer therapeutic services that address a range of life’s challenges. For example:

Understanding addiction pathways

Using porn, alcohol, drugs, food or gambling is a common way to soothe oneself and numb pain. Understanding the reasons for limiting and self-harming behaviours can lead to overcoming addiction and bring emotional relief.

Exploring sexuality & LGBTIQA+ challenges

By exploring our sexuality and embracing our uniqueness, new perspectives of the self can appear and flourish.

Disclosing domestic violence & sexual abuse

Within a trauma-informed therapeutic relationship, survivors may give voice to their trauma, and empower themselves to rebuild self-esteem and establish healthy boundaries.

Processing narcissistic manipulation

Being supported to feel emotions such as surging anger can help us to process the damaging psychological manipulation of others.

Alleviating depression and anxiety

Feeling the affect and meaning of life’s shocks and hardships is a step towards finding motivation and hope.

Soothing grief and sorrow

By experiencing authentic presence and empathetic exchange, our grief, over time, becomes manageable.

Exploring isolation and detachment Issues

Within a therapeutic relationship that has a solid and reliable foundation, we can work towards reconnection and secure attachment.

Differentiating from family roles and relationships

When we examine the roles and relationships within our families of origin we gain clarity and courage to define our own lives and pathways.

Regulating overwhelming or controlling reactions

As controlling reactions become activated, we can learn to ground ourselves and breathe. In that breath we can decide if the reaction is helpful or not, and choose more positive actions and responses.

About Alex

Born in Sydney, I was an anxious and bullied child who fortunately found solace and friendship through music, arts and culture. After completing a Bachelor of Performing Arts at Western Sydney University, Nepean, and the NIDA Director’s Course, I spent many joyful years collaborating with actors and theatre artists to produce and tour mainstage theatre productions in Australia and overseas. Alongside this, I also creatively produced corporate events nationally. A move to Darwin in the 2000s gave me the opportunity to create theatre and large-scale events with dynamic and culturally-diverse communities while also working in community health. I realised that the skills I had acquired during my career in the arts – such as deep listening, courageous collaboration, and holding space for insight and creative processes – were complementary to helping others, and went on to complete a Masters of Psychotherapy and Counselling at Western Sydney University. This life-changing course enabled me to untangle deeply-ingrained patterns of behaviour and reactivity, to come into a healthy relationship with childhood trauma, and to live with a newfound sense of security in the world. Now, after many years of supporting creative teams to put stories on stage, I’ve left the bright lights and sequins behind to instead support clients as they share their own stories and seek breakthrough and renewal. Married to my partner of over two decades, I also believe that my personal experience of the ebbs and flows of long-term commitment enriches my therapeutic practice with compassion and maturity.
